 El pasado 28 de junio el estadounidense Andy Irons se proclamó campeón del Rip Curl Pro Search en la localidad chilena de Arica frente a su compatriota Damien Hobgood.
Irons, tres veces campeón del Mundo ASP venció a Hobgood en una final que se desarrolló con olas de 1,3 metros, y declaró “ha sido una batalla (…) nunca puedes fiarte del todo de Damien, ya me ha vencido anteriormente en Tavarua, así que sabía que tenía que hacerlo realmente bien. A falta de dos minutos para terminar, todavía estaba nervioso.” 
Irons salta con esta victoria del séptimo al tercer puesto del ranking mundial Fosters ASP, mientras que Hobgood, después de este segundo puesto y de haber vencido en Tahiti, ocupa la segunda plaza del mismo ranking. Damien declaró al terminar el evento: “me hubiese gustado hacerlo mejor en las finales, pero Andy es muy bueno, y además me ha metido presión desde el principio (…) realmente no he tenido ninguna opción.”
