Con motivo de la apertura de una nueva escuela de surf en Asturias, aproveché para –por fin- intentar darle al surf con un poco más de regularidad a ver qué pasaba… Dicho y hecho: estas son mis impresiones de una semanita en Las Dunas Surfcamp, en la localidad asturiana de Salinas. ¡Surf y sidra!
Empecemos siendo sinceros: nunca antes había asistido a un camp de surf, aunque sí a muchos de snowboard, y por tanto no puedo comparar con otros. Pero tampoco es esa mi intención, sino simplemente contaros de primera mano cómo fue la experiencia.
Sigo aclarando el nivel de surf con el que acudía. No era mi primera vez. Hacía siete años que por primera vez me metí al agua –precisamente en San Xuan- y la experiencia no pudo ser más desoladora: nade contra corriente durante un rato (que a mi se me hizo interminable) para que al final me gritasen desde el espigón que tenía que nadar hacia dentro del mar y no hacia la playa. Un desastre.
Después de ese bautizo del que salí escaldado y agotado, tuve uno o dos baños al año, en los que siempre comprobaba: 1- La mala forma física en la que estaba. 2- Por mucho que hubiese patinado y hecho snowboard en mi vida, el surf era muy, pero que muy difícil. Aún así no desesperaba y llegué alguna vez al pico, y alguna vez hasta logre remar alguna ola… ¡Subidón! Incluso recuerdo subirme de pie brevemente para después ser engullido por olas que desde la orilla me parecían enanas y una vez dentro alucinar con su fuerza y tamaño. En definitiva: era, y sigo siendo, un pardillete del agua. Eso sí. Seguía, y sigo, decidido a no rendirme.
More, profesor del camp Así puse rumbo a la Patria querida, con la excusa de la invitación que me hicieron desde la Escuela de surf Las Dunas en Salinas.
La llegada no pudo ser más inesperada. Era el Festival de longboard de Salinas, y lo que iba a ser una escapada de ejercicio físico y buena vida, comenzó con una juerga hasta el amanecer en un pinar de Salinas con motivo de la fiesta final del festival… Con los humos bajados comenzaría el camp dos días después, después de la inevitable resaca regada con sidra y un katxopo de los que quitan el hipo.
Nelo, profesor del camp La escuela de surf está en un bonito chalet en plenoSalinas. Es lo suficientemente grande como para sentirse cómodo aún cuando está a plena capacidad, salvo por el detalle de los dos baños (uno de ellos con jacuzzi) que obviamente se atascan en horas punta como ocurre en cualquier albergue que se precie a lo largo y ancho del mundo. Además el albergue cuenta con salón, comedor, gimnasio, zona de juegos, jardín y una amplia y completa cocina a disposición de los clientes. Además se puede contratar la opción de pensión completa, con lo que no hay que preocuparse por cocinar cuando se vuelve totalmente agotado del agua…¡Muy recomendable!
El lunes a las 08:30 sonó el maldito despertador, y la verdad que jode bastante madrugar en vacaciones. Pero la primera sesión de clases es a las 10 de la mañana, y hay que desayunar en condiciones y prepararse con tiempo. La escuela dispone de neoprenos y tablas para los campers, ya sean de espuma para inicicación como evolutivas, tablones o auténticos pinchos, entre los que destacan los de la marca Lennox Surfboards.
Al ser el primer día de camp los profesores tenían que cerciorarse del nivel real de cada uno, salvo de los que no habían hecho surf nunca cuyo nivel estaba más que claro. En mi caso acabé en un grupo de tres que, sin ser iniciación, tampoco eran perfeccionamiento… Digamos que iniciación avanzada.
Gracias a los dos baños de dos horas al día durante cinco días, acompañados por los profesores More y/o Nelo, aprendí a entrar hasta el pico de una forma más o menos decente, la técnica del pato, saber esperar las olas adecuadas, identificar las que no lo son, posición sobre la tabla, remar más efectivamente, apoyar mejor los brazos en el momento de levantarme, buscar la diagonal… Tantas cosas que ¡a la hora de la verdad casi ni puedo pensar a la vez en ellas! Pero lo cierto es que, como en cualquier deporte, lo importante es seguir practicando, en todo tipo de condiciones y, a ser posible, con alguien a tu lado que te vaya guiando e instruyendo… ¡Y en eso estoy!

El ambiente del camp es magnífico. Tanto profesores, como alumnos y empleados respiran un buen rollo propio de los primeros meses de funcionamiento de un negocio que requiere tanta dedicación y esfuerzo como un surfcamp. A mi personalmente, así como a los amigos y amigas que me acompañaron, me convenció el camp. Volví habiendo aprendido mucho, en mejor forma, y con una buena sonrisa en la cara… De hecho, en estos momentos ¡volvemos a estar allí! Y es que septiembre sigue siendo un buen mes para surfear... ¿alguno no lo es?
