La sexta parada del circuito ASP World Tour supuso una auténtica maratón de surf con la gran guinda de la final entre los dos jóvenes hawaianos.

Irons, que se llevó por el camino al vigente campeón del mundo Mick Fanning y a su compatriota australiano Ben Dunn, pilló dos puntuaciones de 8,33 y 9,33 en los diez últimos minutos para llevarse la final.

Al finalizar el evento, Irons declaró: “uno de mis objetivos cuando empecé el Tour era ganar una prueba, pero no estaba muy seguro de que fuese a lograrlo. Pero las olas han acompañado al evento ¡Así debería ser siempre en el Dream Tour! Me voy a retirar del Tour después de esta temporada, pero no me retiro, seguirñe compitiendo en Pipeline y Teahupoo y alguna prueba más en la que me pueda meter”.
Con esta victoría Bruce se mete entre los diez primeros del ránking ASP, y consigue que la tradición familiar continúe, después de que su hermano mayor Andy venciera en el Rip Curl Pro Search 2007 y en el 2006.
Por otro lado hay que destacar la excelente actuación del portugues Tiago Pires, que hizo la mejor competición de su carrera, llegando a vencer al actual líder Kelly Slater en la tercera ronda.

Con la eliminación de la mayoría de favoritos en primeras rondas, Kelly Slater todavía mantiene un colchón por detrás de él en el ránking. La próxima parada del Tour será en California, del 7 al 13 de septiembre.
