 El brasileño Bruno Santos hizo historia el pasado 15 de mayo al proclamarse vencedor del Billabong Pro celebrado en Tahiti, después de vencer al local Manoa Drollet en la final y convertirse así en el primer brasileño en ganar un campeonato del ASP World Tour en cinco años.
Santos, que participaba gracias a una wildcard conseguida en el evento clasificatorio previo declaró "me siento realmente feliz, es un sueño hecho realidad. Aunque no ha sido un día perfecto para celebrar una final no me importa, aún así es el mejor día de mi vida".

La final se desarrolló en condiciones de un metro no demasiado consistentes. "Pillé dos tubos y después no hubo muchas más olas, quizás la madre naturaleza me estaba ayudando a ganar. Además, como mi tabla era demasiado larga, tuve que pillar otra prestada de un francés, que salvó mi participación. Me encantaría quedarme la tabla".

Antes de ganar el evento, el brasileño se ventiló por el camino a surfers como el australiano Mick Fanning, Taj Burrow o CJ Hobgood a lo largo de las diez mangas de camino a las finales.

La mejor posición del tahitiano Drollet previamente a esta edición del Billabong Pro fue una semifinal en Teahupoo en 1999, donde es considerado uno de los mejores especialistas. Sin embargo las condiciones de la final no le favorecieron, ya que no eran lo suficientemente grandes a lo que está acostumbrado a surfear.
