Slater venció a Fanning por 17.94 a 15.23 y logró así su segunda victoria en el Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast , y además de esta manera volverse a colocar como número uno del ranking ASP desde su último título mundial en el 2006.

“Es realmente satisfactorio” declaró Slater. “El año pasado no llegué a sentirme a gusto del todo. Tanto es así que ya en cuartos de final pensé que ya de momento era el mejor resultado en seis meses”.

Slater y Fanning se han enfrentado, contando esta vez, en nueve ocasiones; y el estadounidense vence el parcial por cinco victorias a cuatro. Sin embargo, previamente a esta victoria, Slater no había ganado a Fanning desde el 2003. Ambos surfers han ganado ahora el Quiksilver Pro Goald Coast dos veces: Fanning en el 2005 y 2007 y Slater en el 2006 y 2008.

“Mick es definitivamente el mejor competidor del mundo hoy en día” dijo Slater. “Comete muy pocos errores y surfea bien una y otra ola. Es uno de esos tíos raros que vienen por detrás o controlan desde delante y tiran de grandes maniobras para pillar buenas puntuaciones cuando le hacen falta”.

Además, la victoria de Slater no ha sido precisamente fácil. Tuvo que eliminar al tres veces Campeón del Mundo Andy Irons en cuartos, y al rookie del año francés Jeremy Flores antes de llegar a finales para batirse con Fanning.
“No me había enfrentado a Irons en una manga de dos desde hace dos años y medio” dijo Slater “y en la manga contra Jeremy me sentía con poca energía, por lo que tuve que emplearme a fondo. Está bien ganar un evento, pero hacerlo ganando a los mejores es mejor todavía”.

Fanning, que se hizo con el número 1 con una victoria en este mismo evento el año pasado, no había abandonado el top del ránking hasta ahora. Consiguió la puntuación más alta en la manga final – un 9.33 – pero necesitaba respaldarlo con un 8.61 que nunca llegó. “Quería otra ola para darlo todo pero desafortunadamente no me apareció. Kelly surfeó de una forma increíble durante todo el evento, y es el mejor surfer de todos los tiempos” dijo Fanning.

El francés Jeremy Flores terminó tercero (junto al australiano Bede Durbidge). A pesar de empezar muy fuerte su manga contra Slater metiéndole presión desde el principio, el americano encontró una combinación de dos excelentes puntuaciones que le terminó por eliminar (por un ajustado 15.47 a 15.17). “Es un muy buen resultado para el primer evento” dijo Flores, “la manga ha estado mu ajustada y creo que podría haber surfeado mejor. Aún así estoy feliz con el resultado y haber perdido frente a Slater no está tampoco mal."
